Utility Pole Accidents: What Everyone Should Know

Tuesday | August 19, 2025

If you ever come across a downed power line or car accident with a utility pole, call the Cooperative’s emergency phone number at 800-282-8610 immediately. You should always assume a line is energized and make sure you and others stay 50 feet away from the downed line. This includes staying clear of anything that may be touching it, like a car.

If you crash your vehicle into a utility pole, it is likely electrically charged. By stepping outside of the vehicle, you risk becoming the electricity's path to ground and could be electrocuted.

What do you do if you crash into a utility pole?

In this scenario, you need to call 911 saying you have been in an accident involving a utility pole and stay in your vehicle until emergency assistance arrives. The safest place is inside your vehicle unless there is an immediate danger, such as a fire.

If your vehicle catches fire and you must get out, follow the steps outlined below.

To exit your vehicle safely:

  • Keep your feet together without touching any part of the vehicle's exterior.
  • "Bunny Hop" out of the vehicle with both feet landing together at the same time.
  • Continue to either hop or shuffle your feet till you're at least 50 feet away from the downed line. If you can still feel a tingling sensation in your legs, repeat until you are safely away from the scene.

This technique keeps your feet at the same electrical potential, preventing the ground's electrical current from traveling through your body, a concept known as step potential.

Educate yourself, your loved ones, and your children about what to do in the event of a utility pole accident. Having this knowledge and knowing how to act could save lives.
